Royal Navy Innovation Hub
The Royal Navy needs to be a leading force on the latest technological advances, it must exploit and introduce new technologies first to gain the war-winning advantage. To support this the Royal Navy has a number of innovation teams: NavyX, NELSON, MarWorks, DARE and OCTO.
• NavyX: The Royal Navy’s autonomy and lethality accelerator, tasked with introducing new technology to the frontline in a more agile way. They work with industry and academia to integrate, test, trial and deliver equipment which will increase mass and lethality above the water, on the water, under the water and in the littoral – ensuring sailors and Royal Marines have operational advantage.
• NELSON: The Royal Navy’s digital lab enabling domain experts to solve their most important digital challenges. Their teams work collaboratively with users to build products and services to support digital transformation: a data platform that will store, process and publish data from across the fleet, and a design system that will make applications look and feel consistent.
• MarWorks: Working closely with tactical users, MarWorks are specialists in delivering architectures to support data flow and tactical feeds over secure, agile communications. As the Royal Navy’s information warfare technology accelerator, they work alongside the user community by conducting rapid experimentation to exploit leading technologies to provide the naval service with cutting-edge solutions.
• DARE: Standing for Discover, Analysis and Rapid Exploitation, the Dare team explore ways of providing cutting-edge technology and operational prototypes to show where the Royal Navy could go in the future. They hear from frontline sailors and Royal Marines on how things could be done differently, and better – helping to turn their ideas into a reality.
• OCTO: The Office of the Chief Technology Officer is responsible for driving technology further and faster at the heart of the naval service. Acting as a catalyst for strategic change, the CTO advises senior personnel on advances in academia and industry to understand how the Royal Navy and Royal Marines can exploit fast changing technology and cultural developments.
